Overhauling this Gretsch Historic Series Acoustic for Jason Evigan (After Midnight Project)
Jason's Gretsch was is rough shape. He writes, tours and gigs with this thing, and it shows.
Strings everywhere, old worn out nut, and generally dirty
Worn frets and filthy fingerboard make this a bit uncomfortable to play. A couple of frets are dead and don't even ring the note.
This image shows the old and new saddles. We cut a fresh one from bone and corrected the poor job that someone did earlier to this thing. The saddle sat at a funny angle and had a wedge shaped shim under the bass side. This is no good for tone, especially when placed on top of a piezo pickup. The bass strings don't ring as loud through the amp as the high strings. The new saddle corrects this by evenly contacting the piezo and bridge.
The old nut had cracked slots and missing pieces. It also looked like it was filthy. The new nut is a replica of the original, perfectly shaped and filed to the proper height. No binding or strings popping out.
The new saddle as it sits in the bridge
Here's the headstock after cleaning this guitar up. Nice new nut installed, clean string winding, no more dust and dirt.

And the finished product. The fingerboard is clean and oiled. The frets are perfectly leveled and dressed. No tuning issues anymore. It sounds and plays fantastic. Jason was very pleased with the results.
